GET RID OF THAT GUILT

DEALING WITH GUILT

The teenage period is more of an experimental phase, a trial and error, and gambling phase of our life. This is the period of our life where we want to try everything within our reach that we have not experienced before whether we know the outcome or not.

The dynamics of the teenage period is there is this tendency to err due to ignorance which might sometimes be costly and other times not. This is the more reason we need our parents advice, mentors instruction and counsellors counsel.

Majority of teenagers find it difficult to subject themselves to authority be it parents, teachers and elders due to youthful exuberance and the knowledge of the transformation from childhood to adult wanting to make decisions on their own which they know little or nothing about.

The decisions we make in this phase of our life could either make us or mar us. The purpose of this write-up is dealing with the guilt of decisions that mars people.

Guilt according to the Meriam Webster dictionary is defined as ‘a bad feeling caused by knowing or thinking that you have done something bad or wrong.

When we make wrong decisions, especially during our teenage years, the probability of living with the guilt for a lifetime if not properly dealt with is very high.

Prov. 17:22 tells us that “Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time” (GNT). Also, the consequences of these decisions and actions weighing on our soul is one thing, the depression sometimes even reproach that comes with the consequences is also another serious issue that could have adverse effects.

Let’s imagine a scenario of a male and female teenager that engaged in a sexual activity which later resulted in pregnancy. At this point, there are only two major options:

To abort the pregnancy

To keep the pregnancy

If they abort the pregnancy, they increase the sense of guilt that they will experience not even to mention the health risk it poses to the life of the lady and most important of all it’s a sin against God. Keeping the pregnancy also takes much courage because of the shame and reproach that comes along with it. Personally, the first is not an option to be considered at all leaving such a person with just one option.

Suddenly, there whole world seems to come crashing down on them. How do they face their parents, their pastors and every other person? Then the devil, being subtle, deceives such people that life is not worth living anymore but this is a lie.

Quickly, in the next few paragraphs, I will talk on how to deal with guilt and get rid of it totally.

The first and foremost thing is to deal with the chaos going on in your mind. You need to find this inner peace which can help you concentrate, focus and avoid wrong/harsh decisions that complicates the issue. Truth be told, no human can help you attain this inner peace, that’s where the person of the holyspirit comes into play. And only if you believe in Jesus and have accepted him will you have access to His spirit. Rom. 10:9 says “Say the welcoming word to God — “Jesus is my Master” — embracing, body and soul, God’s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That’s it. You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation”. Also, Rom.8:1 gives us an assurance that “THEREFORE, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit” (AMP).

The second important step in dealing with guilt is having a shoulder to lean on, a mentor or counsellor to talk to. James 5:16 says “If you have sinned, you should tell each other what you have done. Then you can pray for one another and be healed. The prayer of an innocent person is powerful, and it can help a lot” (CEV). The healing here basically as talks about emotional healing and psychological healing as well. A healing of the soul and mind.

Guilt if not quickly dealt with leads to depression (prov.15:13 A cheerful heart brings a smile to your face; a sad heart makes it hard to get through the day (msg)). It destabilizes ones mood causing swings here and there, low self-esteem and in extreme cases death all via the devils deceit that it can’t get better.

Why not deal with that guilt today

Get rid of it once and for all
